EcoEmails

This originated with me sending regular emails to my close friends and family on environmental issues and changes which could ‘green’ their lifestyle. The group has unintentionally grown quickly as friends of friends ask to join. The EcoEmails don’t always give people an easy solution to a problem but try to make them aware that every decision they make has environmental and sustainability consequences. If you would like to join pls email me at muffinkimber@gmail.com

How is water wasted?

Is it coz Dave leaves the tap running when he brushes his teeth?
Or that Will washes one pair of boxers in the washing machine?

No coz they would never do that – they are “staunch environmentalists…” (RB 2007)

70% of water in the world is used for Agriculture….
water

Therefore if you want to be economical with your water one of the best ways of doing
so is eating foods which don’t use as much water to grow…
But unfortunately for all you boys… that is basically meat… meat glorious meat!?!

So here are a few facts

Litres of water on average required to produce 1 kilo of food…
Potatoes        500
Wheat            900
Maize            1400
Rice              1910
Soya Beans   2000
Chicken         3500
Beef              100,000

So
Chicken over beef….
And Potatoes over Soya Beans…

Tango Flight December 12, 2007

Some Airline will fly further to avoid higher fees as some flight routes have congestion charges…
Planes will fly an extra 100-mile (extra 3 tonnes CO2) for an average saving of £99 per flight!!!

Story bellow if you want to know more:
** Extra fuel burnt in air fee dodge **
If we (the west) do not lead by example – flying 100 miles more just to save less than £1 per passenger how can we ever convince countries like China and India to curb their emissions?

I know airlines have to make money – but the Polluter also should to pay – it is the only way companies can internalise their pollution externalities
And not taxing airline fuel and then letting them pollute more to save money – that is a twisted logic and the crux of the world’s problem.

Just a few quick Nuclear Facts I found out while revising….

UK government has spent 13bn on Nuclear Research and Development
But will need to spend a further 70bn just to Clean up the Nuclear Waste

It has only spent 1bn on research in to Renewable Energy….

Also if you think Nuclear is the solution… think that no new nuclear power plants have been built in the West for 20 years
And any new one in the UK would take at least 10 years until it was up and running…
