This originated with me sending regular emails to my close friends and family on environmental issues and changes which could ‘green’ their lifestyle. The group has unintentionally grown quickly as friends of friends ask to join. The EcoEmails don’t always give people an easy solution to a problem but try to make them aware that every decision they make has environmental and sustainability consequences. If you would like to join pls email me at

You can check which travel firms are environmentally friendly on the Association of Independent Tour Operators where  members have been awarded two or three Responsible Tourism stars for their social, economic and environmental performance.

Many companies are offering to make your flights carbon neutral
You pay an amount based on the distance you fly, and your money funds projects that prevent greenhouse gases being released…

This is a good idea – but in reality isn’t true – in no way does it make your flight carbon neutral…

Admittedly they may have a positive effect by raising ecological awareness.
But a close look at several transactions reveals that some deals amount to little more than feel-good hype which may divert attention and resources from more expensive and effective measures.

For example it costs about £34 to offset a Long Haul Flight of 3,700kg CO2
These companies for example use that money to buy light bulbs which over their life will save the equivalent 3,700kg CO2
But unfortunately the calculation is not that simple – coz you need the light bulbs to save the amount of CO 2 in the same time period.
Where as the plane journey will take a few hours to give off that CO2
The light bulbs will take years to save that amount of CO2
In conclusion to do the job properly you’d need to install a few thousand light bulbs – which would cost a few thousand pounds.
So although these things in theory are a nice idea in reality they are a bit of a scam! And only reduce your guilt rather than off sets your emissions

One good carbon offsetting programme though is…

Ideally just reduce how much you fly… have a look at
50 best no-fly holidays

or go to
And you can search for holidays using an “I don’t want to fly” option

It is hard though… I am going to France and Italy this summer – planning on going by train… but it is so tempting to just take a 20 quid easy jet flight… so much easier.
